Return to Sender: The Post Box Colony Rescue
Welcome back to the Bee Sanctuary! They say bees are nature’s ultimate architects, but even the best builders sometimes pick a floor plan that’s a bit too cramped. Today, we’re in suburban Johannesburg for a unique delivery: a colony that has moved into an old, unused post box.
While it might seem like a cozy spot, for the African honeybee (Apis mellifera scutellata), a post box is a “starter home” that quickly becomes a trap. Here is how we handled this quick, small-scale rescue.
Scout Bees and the Perfect (Small) Cavity
The search for a home starts with Scout bees—the intrepid explorers of the hive. They look for cavities that offer three things: protection from the elements, space to grow, and proximity to food.
This post box ticked the “protection” box perfectly. In fact, the bees had already used thick layers of propolis (bee glue) to seal off the gaps and create a sterile, secure entrance. The only problem? The cavity was tiny—stretching only about 30cm from top to bottom.
The Overcrowding Trigger: Swarming
When bees choose a cavity this small, they run out of “real estate” almost immediately. This triggers a natural response called swarming.
- Colony Reproduction: Swarming is how bees reproduce at a colony level. Half the hive leaves with the old Queen to find a bigger home, while the remaining bees stay behind to raise a new leader.
- The Evidence: During the removal, we found at least three closed Queen cells. This tells us the colony was already prepared for a split. In fact, looking at the bee count, I suspect they had already swarmed once, leaving these “heir apparents” behind to take over.
Technical Extraction: The Small-Knife Surgeon
Working inside a post box is finicky business.
- Tight Spaces: I had to switch to a small, thin knife to navigate the narrow metal walls.
- The Queen Strategy: Since we found multiple closed Queen cells, we weren’t overly worried about finding the original Queen. A new Virgin Queen will hatch in the next few days, go on her mating flights, and lead this colony into the future.
- No Queen Guard: Because we are relying on a new Queen hatching, we cannot put a Queen Guard on the hive. If we did, the new Queen wouldn’t be able to leave for her crucial mating flights, and the colony would fail.
The “Chilling” Stragglers
After the main extraction, we found a small cluster of bees hanging out on a nearby pillar.
- Barehanded Beauty: These guys were incredibly calm—just “chilling” in a small clump. I was able to scoop them up barehanded and drop them into the transport box.
- The Pheromone Pull: Once they are in the box with the rescued brood and Queen cells, they’ll instinctively clump together to keep the “nursery” warm.
The Verdict: A New Beginning
What started as a cramped, unsafe spot in a post box ended with a successful relocation to our apiary. By intervening, we’ve given them the space they need to thrive and prevented future swarms that could have led to unsafe encounters with the homeowners.
