The Palm Tree Patience: A 30-Day Trap-Out Success
Welcome back to the Bee Sanctuary! If there is one thing beekeeping teaches you, it’s patience. Not every removal involves cutting into a ceiling or vacuuming a water fountain. Sometimes, the best way to rescue a colony is to let them decide to move on their own terms.
Today, we headed back to a site where we’ve been running a trap-out on a palm tree for the last month.
The Strategy: The Long Game
A trap-out is a specialized technique we use when bees are deep inside a structure—like the trunk of a palm tree—where we can’t easily cut them out without damaging the tree.
- The Setup: We set up a one-way exit from their wild hive that leads directly into a comfortable, resource-rich trap box positioned right outside.
- The Wait: I told the team at the start: “One month. 30 days. No excuses.” We left them to do their thing, hoping my “homework” on the setup was solid enough to convince the colony to relocate.
The Reveal: 30 Days Later
Coming back to the palm tree after just over 30 days, the results were exactly what we were looking for.
- The Activity: We could see heavy traffic right at the front of the hive box. The bees weren’t just visiting; they had officially moved in.
- The Verdict: The trap-out worked perfectly. No patching up, no emergency repairs—just a successful, natural transition from the tree to the box.
The Night Shift: Transporting the Colony
Because the bees are active during the day, we had to wait for nightfall to make our move. Once it’s dark, the foragers return home and the colony settles down, which is the safest time to:
- Seal the entrance of the trap box.
- Secure it for transport.
- Load it into the vehicle for the trip to their new permanent apiary.
Why Trap-Outs Matter
While they take longer than a standard removal, trap-outs are a fantastic “low-impact” way to save a colony. The bees do most of the heavy lifting themselves, and we get to preserve the local environment—like this beautiful palm tree—without any destructive cutting.
