Concrete Fortresses: A Review of the South African Bunker Hive

Welcome back to the Bee Sanctuary! Today we’re doing something a little different. Instead of a rescue, we’re doing a gear review at one of our unique sites in Johannesburg. This is the only apiary where I use Bunker Hives—molded concrete hives designed right here in South Africa.

These hives were provided by the landowner, and after working with them through a full season, I’ve got some strong thoughts on the pros and cons of this “indestructible” design.

The Concept: Why Concrete?

The Bunker Hive was invented to solve very specific South African problems. The research behind them is fascinating, aiming to provide a more durable alternative to the traditional wooden Langstroth hive.

  • The Honey Badger Shield: We have a major problem with honey badgers in certain areas. These concrete boxes are simply too heavy and sturdy for a badger to flip or break into.
  • Fire Resistance: Our winters in Johannesburg are bone-dry, and veld fires are a constant threat. While a wooden hive would go up in smoke, these concrete bunkers can survive a fire—and there are even stories of colonies surviving inside them while the fire passes over!

The Challenge: The Weight Factor

While the Bunker Hive solves the “external threat” problem, it introduces a massive ergonomic one: Weight.

  • Back-Breaking Maintenance: The lid and the supers are incredibly heavy. Even as an empty box, it’s a mission to lift. Once that super is full of honey frames? You’re looking at an extreme physical workout.
  • Instability: Because they are so heavy, the ground underneath needs to be rock-solid. If one side of the stand sinks into soft soil even slightly, the entire hive can tip over. We actually had one of these fall off its stand, and getting it back up was a two-person job.
  • The “Squash” Risk: With a wooden hive, you have more “feel” when placing a box down. With these heavy concrete units, it’s very hard to avoid squashing bees when you’re wrestling the weight back into place.

Technical Glitches: Lids and Rods

Working with these hives requires a bit more patience than a standard setup.

  • The Sticky Lid: Unlike wooden hives, these don’t typically use an inner cover. Without a burlap or fabric barrier, the bees propolize the frames directly to the heavy concrete lid. Lifting the lid often means accidentally pulling up the frames with it.
  • The Alignment Rod: These hives use a metal rod to keep the frames lined up. During my inspection, one of these rods slipped out. Trying to slide a metal rod back into a hive full of bees is a finicky, time-consuming challenge that you just don’t face with traditional equipment.

The Verdict

The bees actually seem to love these hives. Some of our strongest colonies are housed in these bunkers, likely due to the excellent thermal insulation concrete provides.

However, for a commercial beekeeper moving dozens of hives, the weight is a dealbreaker. I’d recommend these primarily for hobbyist beekeepers who have one or two hives in a permanent garden spot where fire or honey badgers are a major concern.
