Scaling Up: Inside a Commercial Honey House in Johannesburg
Welcome back to the Bee Sanctuary! This week, we’re stepping out of the suburbs and into the world of industrial-scale beekeeping. I recently had the privilege of touring a commercial honey house with Brett Falconer of Highveld Honey Farms.
Brett is a veteran who has managed up to 8,000 hives at his peak. Seeing the sheer logistics of moving thousands of supers through an extraction line is a far cry from the single-hive removals we usually do, but the biology and challenges remain remarkably similar.
The Logistics of a “Honey Rush”
When you’re farming at this scale, everything is about timing and volume.
- The Night Shift: Highveld Honey runs two loads a night, with each truck carrying between 450 to 500 supers.
- The Macadamia Push: Right now, there’s a major “rush” because Macadamia farmers are starting to spray pesticides. The team has to work around the clock to move bees and extract honey before the spray affects the colonies.
- Winter Preparation: While smaller beekeepers might slow down, commercial guys spend June through August moving thousands of hives to different flowering areas like Rustenburg and Pretoria to catch staggered flows.
The Capensis Invasion: A South African Crisis
During the tour, we touched on a serious threat to northern beekeeping: Apis mellifera capensis.
- The Natural Barrier: Originally, the Capensis bee stayed in the Western Cape, while the Scutellata (African honeybee) stayed in the north.
- The Invasion: Someone brought Capensis across that barrier, and now these bees are invading Scutellata hives. Capensis workers can actually lay eggs that become female clones, essentially taking over a Scutellata hive and causing it to collapse. It’s a massive problem for commercial beekeepers in Gauteng.
The Reality of Theft and Vandalism
One of the saddest parts of the conversation was about the security of hive sites.
- Ruthless Theft: Brett mentioned losing 500 hives to theft in a single April. In South Africa, thieves don’t just take the honey; they often destroy the entire hive box. Brett compared it to someone “cutting down the whole tree just to steal the peaches.”
- Abandoned Sites: Because of this, many prime foraging areas—like Richard’s Bay, which used to produce 70 tons of honey—are no longer used because the vandalism is simply too high.
Technical Extraction: Chains and Screws
Watching the machines work is a lesson in efficiency.
- The Uncapper: A machine uses spinning chains to strip the wax caps off the frames before they head into the extractor.
- The Wax Screw: Underneath the uncapper, a “screw” machine compresses the wax cappings, squeezing out every last drop of honey until only dry “sausages” of wax come out the other end.
- Foundation Secret: Brett shared a great tip for frame longevity: when installing foundation, make sure the wax touches the bottom bar. If the bees join it there, the frame is much less likely to break when spinning at high speeds in an industrial extractor.
The Verdict: Symbiotic Industry
Even at this massive scale, beekeeping is still about the relationship between the keeper and the bees. Whether we’re “robbing” a single hive or 5,000, the goal is to keep the colonies strong enough to thrive through the next flow.
